I booked this home for my daughter, spouse, two children age 8 and 3 and our son in law mother. Their first response to my question about the home -It is great!
This is a lovely home with an incredible view. The home is in excellent condition, well maintained and spotless clean.
It is close to must see attractions in St. John's and a great grocery store Belbin's. We hiked from the Geo Center to Quidi Vidi village for lunch and back to the home via Forest Road. A short drive to Signal Hill or walk is moderate walking is possible.
We loved sitting inside at the window with a glass of wine and could
spend hours just watching the boats in the harbor pass by.
Before accepting our booking Paul the owner made sure we were aware of the physical set up of the home i.e one of the bedrooms requires access to the outside stairs. My daughter and spouse slept in this room and grandmother slept with the kids in the main part of the house. Paul had breakfast goodies and coffee available for the first morning. This gesture was greatly appreciated as we arrived from a long flight at 4:30 AM . Son in law regrets he did not force himself to stay awake for sun rise on Signal Hill that morning.
It is our hope to return to Nfld soon and once again stay at 59 Battery
Our three year old learned how to manipulate the stairs very quickly. Like being on a ship. The two kids loved the home. Paul dropped by with lots of great kid books on a rainy morning.
So grateful for this incredible experience. Thank you Paul!
An authentic St. John's experience
I stayed in the cottage for 5 days during my first trip to St. John's for a wedding. All the wedding guests were jealous that they were only staying in a hotel instead! The cottage is very cute and bright and I loved the grass area with a view of the harbour. We did yoga there a few times ;) The proximity to downtown was not bad at all either, we walked in everyday for food or wedding events and took a cab the day of the wedding. We also had coffee every morning at the battery cafe which was only ~400 m away. I loved being so close to signal hill as well. You really don't need a car with this locaiton! The cottage was very clean and had everything we needed. The one addition I would suggest is blackout curtains or blinds as its super bright at night and in the morning for sleeping. The seagulls are also having a party over the harbour 24/7, but ear plugs blocked that noise out just fine. I would definitely stay again.
Great location. Great house.
Great location. Great house.
Might be the very best rental we have ever had...and we have traveled a good deal !
We are a couple in our 70's and have been lucky enough to have traveled to many wonderful places in the world. At the end of our 4 night stay in St. John's, we were already planning our next trip!
Much of what made our experience so special was the beautiful home Paul has created. I echo what other folks have said about the decor, the immaculate housekeeping, the view, the library. There is a spirit and a warmth in this little cottage. I loved reading about the history of the city from the brilliant collection available to us and feeling like we were living right in the midst of the seafaring people who founded the town. Don't miss the wall murals of early St. John's around town, one at the lower part of Battery. Great food (Raymond's, Mallard Cottage, Duke of Duckworth, Rocket). Super friendly people, including the owner of Belkin's Grocery, the park official who shoots the canon on Signal Hill, and certainly Paul himself. Fabulous vistas...Cape Spear. Outstanding hiking...from Signal Hill back home to Battery Road made for an amazing last afternoon.
We loved going to sleep to the lights of the ships and waking up to a chorus of seagulls and the sun on the green hills. We were especially grateful to be immersed in this culture and beautiful natural environment at a time when the world feels a bit wobbly. Both of us came home with new energy from just 4 days in this wonderful cottage and charming town.
Exceptionally charming, eclectic home with luxurious amenities!
This charming, colorful, eclectic home was everything I had hoped it would be. The view is outstanding and allowed us to absorb St. John's from a private perch.. The bedding and towels felt thick and luxurious and the kitchen and bath were well equipped. The beautiful garden and deck with flowering lilacs was an outstanding spot to view the activity in the harbor. Very pleased I chose this cozy getaway.
Beautiful home in a fantastic location
My family of four adults spent five nights in this beautifully decorated and updated home and were constantly entertained by the various fishing boats, passenger ships, pilot boats and larger vessels coming into and out of the harbour - all from the comforts of home! The location in the battery is also great for walking into town, or onto the trails leading around the point and up to Signal Hill. We also had a car, and were always able to park right by the house.
Thank you Paul, for a wonderful stay in your beautiful home. It was one of the highlights of our trip!
