Pretty Good, Overall
The property manager was prompt, thorough, and kind, and we really enjoyed our stay on the Bruce Peninsula.
Pros: Beautiful & relaxing property, with gorgeous view of Lake Huron, sandy beach. Fully stocked kitchen (also see cons), and comfortable living room seating. Great tv/media setup. Friendly neighbors. Interesting and quirky collection of decor, mementos and travel souvenirs - we felt like we got to know the family who owns it, and appreciate them as people.
Upon arrival, the front door was unlocked and ajar, which was unnerving. The place was tidy, but not very clean, so we had to do some housekeeping right away in order to settle in. I'd suggest getting a better cleaning service including laundry; there was a wet, sour load of towels in the washer. The cottage contains all full-size beds, despite the listing of 2 queen beds. Bedroom with bunk bed has a loose window pane, and needs curtains. A few lamps had no light bulbs. Listing says kid-friendly, but there are a few hazards, mostly due to clutter. The bar stool seats aren't screwed to the bases - don't sit on them! Refrigerator/freezer was filled with a LOT of old food (unknown meat from April 2018), and we ended up filling 2 trash bags and taking them to the dump, where we paid for disposal, per bag. Other people's half-eaten food and leftovers. Bosch pod coffee maker works, but we brought our own coffee grounds, and the drip coffee maker was broken. There was also an ant infestation in the kitchen and living room. These may seem like complaints, but it is more so you know what to expect, and hopefully the owners will make some minor improvements. We left the place nicer and cleaner than when we arrived, and if other renters do that, it would help too.
This rental experience taught me that staying in a cottage is like camping, except with a roof over our heads and protection from the elements. It was more rustic than I had anticipated, with a lot of clutter, which made it one notch less relaxing. I'd say some attention to details regarding comfort would make this cottage more accommodating, but if you're laid back enough, maybe those things won't bother you as much. Would we stay here again? Probably, but not definitely. At least we know its idiosynchracies! And we love Canada and the Bruce!
I loved the cottage and the beautiful lake
