Fantastic Stay - Reunion in a Storm
The Old Barn was an ideal facility for our reunion (5 guys who haven’t been together since High School) Plenty of space. Nice bedrooms and rooms to gather, to talk, play and listen to music. The Barn had everything we needed. We could cook on an electric stove, wood stove or a barbecue. In spite of being there during Nova Scotia’s worst storm and losing power we totally enjoyed ourselves. There were candles for us to use and if we needed anything, we were only 10 minutes away from the historic Town of Lunenburg. Heidi, the owner came out to ensure we were doing OK and that everything at the house was Ok which was a nice touch. There was a Fire Pit for sitting out at night and enjoying each other’s company. We had other visitors too, 10 deer greeted us during our stay. The Old Barn is rustic and the steps to the second and third floors may be steep but that’s what gives this building its charm. WE all had a great time and would welcome The Old Barn if you want a great place to stay for a few days. Thank You Bob, Monica and Heidi for making our experience a memorable one! We will be back.
Thank you James and crew for your patience and toughing out the Hurricane. We are glad the OLD BARN was built very massive and protected you well. We will add your info about the steep step to the description. You are very welcome to try our other homes on Cape Breton Island capebreton.vacations
This is a very cute cabin in the woods. It is clean, comfortable and has lots of space. It is about a 15 minute drive into Lunenburg and to Blue Rocks. The owners responded to our questions very quickly. There are a few things that renters should be aware of to ensure this cabin is suitable for them: there is no access to the ocean - even just to view the sunset from shore - as all of the nearby access points (within walking distance) are down private roads. Although the area geneally is very isolated, this cabin is directly across the street from 2 homes. The cabin can get very hot in warm weather. We were unable to open sevearal windows and most of the windows which open do not have screens or have large holes in the screens. There is an A/C unit - but we were hoping to cool off with the fresh country air. There are no fans. If you are going when then weather is cool - this will not be an issue at all. Lastly, the stairs up to the 2nd floor (where the main sitting room is and the bedrooms) are very steep and would not be accessible for anyone with mobility/balance issues or the very old or very young.
Thanks for your feedback. We will take care of the windows. Two of them open with some efforts only, will be replaced after season.
The property indicated A/C, however, the unit was located upstairs, did not cool, and not downstairs where the main living quarters are located. We had to go buy a fan to make it reasonably comfortable to sleep.
The rooms upstairs are difficult to access with very steep stairs. Only one bathroom on the first floor, so can't imagine navigating the stairs in the middle of the night.
We emailed the owners before our trip regarding a blow dryer. We were told there was one there, but there was not. We waited a day to receive one.
The amenities listed a microwave, but there was not one there. We bought snacks that needed microwaving, but couldn't use them.
The property is located on Heckman's island, but all water access is private property. So, don't plan to walk to the water.
You have to drive to get access.
The grounds of the home were in bad shape with "junk" lying around. There are so many beautifully landscaped homes around the area, but this is not one of them.
Lots of spiders and bugs in the home.
Also, there are no curtains or shades on the windows or doors facing the roadway or the area you have to access the bathroom from the bedroom. We hung towels over the windows to give us privacy.
Nova Scotia was amazing and absolutely gorgeous! The only disappointing part of our vacation was our accommodations. We have stayed at several Airbnbs and had great luck, so this was very frustrating.
