I am so grateful we found the Hoblet. It’s peaceful, calm, quiet and so relaxing, hidden in a forest yet close to so much. Just a short drive to Niagara Falls and a bit further to Niagara-on-the-Lake or Fort Erie. Petra and Mush are the best hosts. They do not disturb, however are just a moment away if you need them. Lovely couple, and they care deeply for the animals at the sanctuary. We will miss Gretel (the piggy) and her daily visits with us. We have no hesitation in highly recommending The Hoblet, or it’s sister cottage, The Twiglet, to anyone who wishes a relaxing place to desires. Thank you Petra and Mush for allowing us to partake in this enchanting cottage. We will return.
Quirky little home in a beautiful setting
After a long flight from uk we were greeted by Petra (owner) who was so warm and friendly and gave us a tour of the little hoblet where we would call home for the next few weeks. Everywhere was clean and tidy and we were treated to a full fridge to get us started with fresh orange, milk, bread and jam to help us while we could get to the shops. Nothing was too much trouble. Wonderful start to the holiday. We met Mush the next day who was just as welcoming. We had a meet and greet with all the beautiful animals who we took to our hearts and couldn't help buying little titbits for. They often came to the hoblet to see us especially Gretal and Groot, 2 pigs who loved roming around and rooting. So friendly .
We were given lots of books to look though but our special book was Petra and Mush's own recommendations. Being new to the country we used the book like a bible and did everything in that book including places to visit, where you eat, best times to do things for best value for money . We ended up doing things twice they were so good . We even had a flying lesson over welland which Petra personally sorted for us .
We cannot fault anything from this holiday . Loved every minute of every day . Thank you so much to Petra and Mush for making us so welcome and looking after us like you both did . We already thinking of visiting you both again and it warms the heart that you both made my 50th pressy so special . We will see you again for sure.
5 star +++
Nice, but . . .be prepared!
While the Hoblet itself is quaint and its forest location leafy and restful, more attention could be paid to the mundane needs of guests, e.g., hand towels & TP refills where they can be found (not on top of a 7' high shelf. Also a map of the minor roads in the area.) She told us that although she was a tour guide, it was along time ago, and she herself hasn't been to the Falls in many years. We could not get cellphone service (on Verizon). We understood "self catering" to mean we bring all our own food, but not that we should also bring dish detergent, for example. When we told her it was nearly gone, she told us where we could buy some. The single electrical outlet reachable by small appliances leads the cord across the refrigerator door. And guests should probably know beforehand that they are asked to put used toilet paper in the waste basket, not the toilet. (We didn't understand this at all, since my septic system is fine with toilet paper.) A train track runs right next to the property, and when a train comes along, it sounds as though it's going right through the living room, though this happened only once, on a Saturday night. The owner offered no help in finding our way around the area and routinely understated the time necessary to get anywhere. The only restaurant she recommended is a good 25 minutes away along a tortuous route, in a village not even on a map. It's a pub--overpriced and noisy, though the mac & cheese was excellent. We discovered only after our first trip there that it's closed on Mondays. She was hard to contact once we got settled in, and she seemed to resent the intrusion when we had a question. We enjoyed what contact we had with the goats and pigs. To be clear, I have travelled a lot, usually in cheaper accommodation, and I've tent camped. I also ran a successful B&B for ten years. At $135/night, I expected more from a place so far above my usual budget and which advertises itself as being attentive to its guests..
Normally I would thank our guests for taking the time to write a review and express their opinions. However most of your remarks are simply outrageous and blatant lies.
You failed to mention that we offered you (and strongly suggested) to
CANCEL WITH A FULL REFUND AT TIME OF BOOKING!. We even contacted VRBO and gave them instructions to allow a cancellation and complete refund. My suggestion was to not visit Niagara Falls in the height of peak season as your accompanying email complained of the price (why did you book it?).
YOU WERE ALSO OFFERED A REFUND THE DAY AFTER YOU ARRIVED! NOT ONLY A REFUND, I OFFERED TO FIND YOU ANOTHER PLACE.
Furthermore, you were given a discount of almost one hundred dollars after your constant wining of prices. For over 3 months we catered to your abundance of your emails. Requesting locations of free swimming pools, free beaches, cheap parking, where to go for free, eat cheap and on and on.
We asked you not to cook bacon (there is even a sign above the stove top) in consideration for the next guest and the fact that the potbelly piggies roam free in the hoblet yard. The smell of bacon drives them into anxiety, but you just laughed and rolled your eyes when I said that was disrespectful.
In your arrogance you felt you could come and invade our space whenever you felt like it. Going through our private gate at our drive way, not bothering to ring the bell or the horn, you would just march up to our home and knock on the door; borrow milk, bring me a glass you broke, than for directions and finally to ask me to call around to the attractions and get prices for you so you could plan out your budget. So yes, it an intrusion (multiple ones)..
You obviously missed seeing the reserve second bottle of detergent, missed seeing the 2nd and 3rd power outlets. How about the extra food, condiments and beverages that we bought & put there specifically FOR YOU to help you with your budget. No mention of all the discounts and free admission tickets I got for you. Instead you have the audacity to say I offered no help in finding your way around and that I have not been to the falls in years!!!! REALLY!
It is almost embarrassing that I have to defend our property & reputation from the lies and absurdities that you have stated. Let me be very clear as well; you upset our animals and ourselves and you should be ashamed of your behavior. Rental owners should be forewarned!
Amazing mini Vaca
My daughter Alivia and I went to Niagra for 3 days to see the falls. I was very pleased with our stay at the hoblet. The cabin is beautiful and inviting. The furniture is very comfortable. The grounds are stunning. Beautiful from the time you pull up. Petra and Mush are very welcoming and are always available to assist you if needed. The best part is truly the aminals. We enjoyed getting to know them during our short stay. Thank you Petra and Mush for your wonderful hospitality and for all the hard work you put into the property and those sweet animals. We will see you again in the future!
We SO enjoyed having you both here, great smiles and you got to see so much. You are always welcome back.. The piggies send their oinks, lol
Our family enjoyed a great week at the Falls! Traveling during the first week in July we knew it would be busy in the area. The quiet and relaxing Hoblet made for a great place to end each day, away from all the crowds. For me especially, the animals made for an extra special experience! I loved the goats and pigs the most. George and Monty are so dang cute! Them and the pigs have much character lol!! They were great to wake up to each day. We were happy that Monty made it home from the hospital while we were there. We were hoping to meet him.
Petra and Mush could not have been better hosts. They really go above and beyond! So very thoughtful! Mush even started our campfire, showing us a great trick that we will take back with us. The suggestions of places to visit from Petra were especially helpful!! It made for a great trip with lots of memories made! We were able to do so much.
Our boys slept in the living area which worked fine. The bedroom worked well for my husband and I. The kitchen worked nicely for a simple breakfast. We ate out for the rest of our meals. There was a grill but we didnt end up using it. It was super hot during the week of our visit so dinner out somewhere with a/c was a nice treat.
The fire pit area was really nice too. If the mosquitoes had been better we certainly would have done more fires. We are city folks, so the bugs got to us a bit :) Mush said the flies are particularly bad this year and with the rainy weather prior to our visit that made the mosquitoes worse.
For our adventures.... My guys loved the Niagara Glen hiking trails the most. It was gorgeous and just challenging enough! My favorite was the Hornblower. So much fun! I'm really happy we stayed a whole week. We were busy every day. There is so much to do in the area. We had time to drive up to Toronto a day and even visited Canada's Wonderland a day.
Our family will no doubt have lasting memories of this trip! Thank you Petra, Mush and the gang for a great time!! :)
Ps... I hope those stylish leggings do the trick ;)
.....THANKS SO MUCH for taking the time to write your nice review, and to mention all the spots to visit. Folks come for the falls and miss a lot (we love the Niagara Glen too). We and the critters appreciated your visit and we hope the "leggings" for Homey the donkey work! Thanks for caring about our beloved critters! Again, hope for the planet when we see families travelling together and taking to enjoy the smaller things too!
Take good care of each other, and thanks so much too for recycling!
all the best,
Mush and Petra and the critters
