An Unusual, Enjoyable House near Halifax
I always wanted to stay in an "extreme home", that is, a house converted from some other type of building. This tiny church, St. Cecilia by the Sea, was completely gutted and renovated by the thoughtful Brett Ryan. Brett met us on the first day to show us around the house and answer any questions. He is delightful and was very responsive to questions during our 3 week stay. Our only downside was the heat upstairs in the two bedrooms in July. Brett is working on getting a better air conditioning system, which will help for those occasional sweltering days and nights. It was a surprise to us, living in Florida, to find there were days that were hotter in Halifax than back home! The kitchen was well stocked and perfect for us, as we cooked in most of our meals. I loved our stay, and the house location was perfect to explore central Nova Scotia and easily pop into Halifax or over to Dartmouth for the day, it is also close to a good grocery store and some great restaurants. My favorite part of the house was actually the patio overlooking Purcell's Cove. I spent time on the patios everyday.
We thoroughly Enjoyed our stay at St Cecilia. She is OVERFLOWING with History and Interesting artifacts. The sun shining through the stained glass was breath taking! The living room area gave you a feeling of Royalty and the kitchen was very cozy and well stocked. Having access to a washer and dryer on-site was beyond convenient. The hosts Brett and Lara were Wonderful and readily available We would HIGHLY recommend staying here!
A one-of-a-kind experience
There's only one way to describe our time at St. Cecilia by the Sea - uniquely amazing. You won't ever stay at another place like it. Brett and Lara are wonderful hosts and the property is lovely, historic, filled with character, and relaxing. When have you ever stayed in a church? Wonderful water views, fantastic cycling, and a short drive in and out of Halifax for the history and waterfront there. I highly recommend St. Cecilia's and will return!
Interesting and unique concept
Our visit to Halifax was a last minute decision. We had been in PEI and decided to extend our vacation. This church, turned into a rental, was a great surprise. Brett, the owner, met us when we arrived and was very welcoming. He gave us the history of the church and told us about friends and family that did the stained glass ( musical notes in some of them - Brett's a musician) the paintings and the church ceiling.. The large kitchen was a treat for my husband, who loves to cook. The living room was extremely spacious filled with antiques and the bedroom that we used ( 1 of 2) had an adjoining full bathroom and an alcove which served as a walk- in closet.
The church is located on a hillside overlooking Purcell's Cove. Very nice, indeed.
The drive into Halifax was a short 20 minutes; it was worth it for us to stay in a peaceful and tranquil area.
Great location, just several miles out of Halifax but plenty of privacy. Excellent hosts. Wonderfully creative ideas for the overall feel of the remodeled church.
Hope to return! Dan
Truly a brilliant spot to sit and proofread a book, and also to do some additional writing - with downtown Halifax just a 15minute drive away come dinner time.
I will be back.
A fantastic location, super cool property and wonderful hosts.
